1 John 4:18:
There is no fear in Love; but perfect love casts out fear,

Many Christians will not even talk about the subject of Satan, demons or possession because of fear. That’s like being at war and being afraid to know where the enemy’s lines are, how many are in the army, what kind of equipment they have or where the enemy is about to attack.

(Basic Theology Ryrie)
pg. 157
Never did our Lord correct anyone for their acceptance of the reality of demons (Luke 10:17). All writers of the New Testament (except the writer of Hebrews)
mention demons for a total of 100 references.

pg. 165
Definition. Demon-possession is the direct control by demon(s) of an individual by residing in him. All people, believers and unbelievers, are influenced and affected by demon activity, but not all are possessed.

pg. 168
How can this evidence be evaluated? Here are two suggestions.
First we should discard phrases like “demon-possession” and “demon
indwelling” when referring to these concepts to believers.

We tend to read into these terms the same idea we have about Spirit indwelling (i.e., a permanent residence in the believer). Neither Satan nor demons can permanently indwell a believer nor ultimately have victory over him, even though they may dominate or control a believer’s life for some time. During the Middle Ages there was wide scale misusage of exorcism and doctrines of demons.

By the sixteenth century these terms were greatly restricted and then abolished.
In the early centuries of the church, a convert to Christianity could not take Holy Communion, but was expected to attend Sunday worship and to receive instruction before being baptized usually at Easter.

This period of preparation lasted anywhere from one to three years and ended with rigorous examination and discipline during Lent. The latter included being exorcised, fasting, and an all-night vigil before
Easter Sunday.
(Evangelical Dictionary of Theology - Elwell P. Toon pg. 198)

Justin Martyr records that the exorcism of demon-possessed individuals continued to be an active ministry of the post-apostolic church. The rite of exorcism took on a variety of forms such as prayer, fasting, laying on of hands, burning of roots, or the sprinkling of holy water. However, one crucial element to a successful exorcism was the invocation of the name of Jesus Christ (Second Apology 6).

Tertullian also witnesses to the power of Christ’s name when invoked against a demon. When properly adjured, the demon would tell the truth about himself, and was made to obey the word of the exorcist
(Apology 23).
(Evangelical Dictionary of Theology - Elwell S.E. McClelland, pg. 308)

Jesus Christ was involved with exorcism. Mark 1

The disciples were involved with exorcism. Luke 10:17

Paul was involved with exorcism. Acts 16:18

The post-apostolic church was involved in exorcism.

The churches in the early centuries were involved in exorcism.

Acts 16:17-18 Following after Paul and us, she kept crying out, saying “These men are bond-servants of the Most High God, who are proclaiming to you the way of salvation.” 18) And she continued doing this for many days. But Paul was greatly annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her!” And it came out at that very moment.

(There is Power in the name of Jesus Christ)

Mark Chapter 1, demonstrates the importance that Jesus placed on the reality of Satan and demons.

Mark 1:1-11
Is talking about John the Baptist.

Mark 1:12-13

Acts 5:16
And also the people from the cities in the vicinity of Jerusalem were coming together, bringing people who were sick or afflicted with unclean spirits; and they were all being healed.

For He had been commanding the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard; and yet he would burst his fetters and be driven by the demon into the desert.

Demons can cause nudity.
Luke 8:27
And when He had come out onto the land, He was met by a certain man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs.

Demons can possess few in number.
Luke 8:2
and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,

Demons can possess in legions.

The Unsaved
2 Corinthians 4:3-4
And even if our Gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that they might not see the light of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

The Saved
Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places.

The problem many have, is a result of drawing lines of separation between the saved and the unsaved, that were never intended to be drawn.

A Christian, who is out of fellowship with God, can fall into sin just as any demon-possessed person can.

1 Corinthians 5:1-5 It is reported commonly that there is fornication among you, and such fornication as is not so much as named among the Gentiles, that one should have his father’s wife. 2) And ye are puffed up, and have not rather mourned, that he that hath done this deed might be taken away from among you. 3) For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, 4) In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5) To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.

Does it make sense that a Christian could live a life of unrepented sin and not have problems with demons?

“Infiltration” …IS THE KEY WORD!

Infiltration is when an evil spirit or spirits enters a person’s body with the intent to control that person. Who can be infiltrated?
Answer: Humans.

Can a Christian be infiltrated?
Answer: A Christian is human.

It’s important to realize that there are many people who think that they are Christians when in fact they are not. It would be wrong to give these people the impression they cannot be infiltrated by demons when clearly and in truth, they may be.
1 Thessalonians 5:23
Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Senses dwell in the body.
(Flesh or Shell)

Self dwells in the soul.
(Mind, Emotion, Will)

God dwells in our spirit.
(He has sealed us)

Ephesians 1:13
In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the Gospel of your salvation — having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise...

Ephesians 2:6
and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus,

John 17:21
that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

The Holy Spirit communicates with us through our conscience, and intuition. A demon or demons cannot dwell in a saved person’s spirit, because that is where God the Holy Spirit dwells.

The real us is sealed in the Holy Spirit.
There is a battle going on; the Holy Spirit wants to control your whole spirit, soul, body.
But He won’t violate your will.
The will is man’s ability to choose. You are what you choose to be:
a spiritual Christian or a fleshly Christian.

Demons know they cannot enter the Christian’s Holy of Holies.
The dwelling place of God - the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 3:16

Do you not know that you are a temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you.

Remember the temple had three parts.

Outer Court ... Inner Court ... Holy Place
(BODY) …....... (SOUL) .…... (SPIRIT)

Unrepentant sin gives demons permission to infiltrate us and do their work in us, but only in the areas of the inner and outer court.

We then are grieving and quenching the Holy Spirit when we give into their temptations and do not repent, 1 John 1:9.

They then have the right to infiltrate within our soul and body.

The demon’s goal is to totally control our soul and body by influencing our will to make wrong choices.

Demons use many different methods in this process.
The main method we should all be aware of is when demons attempt to make people think that the demons are who we are. What they actually do is to disguise themselves as us. The first person “I” and “me” is actually them. So when we are drawn to do evil or think horrible evil thoughts, it may not be us at all, but actually them. Their goal is undetected deception.

Demons can go undetected and can do whatever they want to do short of taking our salvation away, as long as we give them the rights by sin and do not repent.

Victory is achieved when we believe what the Bible says about who we are in Christ. We must be honest with ourselves and God and be willing to repent. That means changing directions in regard to our choices, thoughts and actions.

Only with this commitment can full victory be ours though Jesus Christ, the Lord of all.

When a person correctly believes in Jesus Christ, his nature is supernaturally changed and his eternal destiny is determined forever, as a result of the work of Christ.

He at that moment is indwelt by the Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:9
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.

We have wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption.
1 Corinthians 1:30
But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption...

We are members of a chosen race, ordained into a royal priesthood, members of a holy nation.
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

We are temples of the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:19
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

We are saints.
1 Corinthians 1:2
to the church of God which is at Corinth, to those who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, saints by calling, with all who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours:

We are washed, sanctified, and justified.
1 Corinthians 6:11
And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.

We have been glorified. Note: It’s past tense.
Romans 8:30
And whom He predestined, these He also called; and whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.

We have been seated in heavenly places.
Ephesians 2:6
And raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, in Christ Jesus...

Our Citizenship is in heaven.
Philippians 3:20
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;

We are ambassadors for Christ.
2 Corinthians 5:20
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were entreating through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.

James 4:7
Submit therefore to God.
Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

Total Commitment!

Satan’s tricks include the misapplication of a truth. This trick has been used time after time to destroy a truth. Christian leaders will usually take the easy way out by doing away with the whole truth, rather than to correct the devil’s mis-application of a truth.

Some will say this can’t be!
How can good and evil dwell in the same place?
If the only argument we had was pointing out the fact that God is everywhere present in this sinful evil world, that should be good enough. We also have the Holy Spirit dwelling within the born-again believer’s sinful evil body. Surely that is good and evil dwelling in the same approximate place.

Remember, no demon can dwell in our spirit because that is where God is.

We might ask the question how did the serpent get in the garden?
Was everything in the garden good?
Was the serpent good or evil?

Paul said: Romans 7:21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good.
Is the evil that Paul is talking about really evil?
How can it dwell within Paul if evil and good cannot dwell together?
Is it less evil than a demon?

Jeremiah 17:9
The heart is more deceitful than all else and is desperately sick; Who can understand it?

2 Corinthians 12:7
And because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, for this reason, to keep me from exalting myself, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet me — to keep me from exalting myself!

“a messenger of Satan to buffet me”

Is the messenger of Satan in Paul’s flesh more or less evil than the evil Paul speaks of within him in Romans 7:21?

Romans 7:21 I find then the principle that evil is present in me, the one who wishes to do good.

It appears that there were quite a few demons around in New Testament times. Where did they all go? Could they still be here?

Have they tricked us, so we think they are not around, when they are?
We know God is Holy and God is more powerful than Satan, but they do appear to operate at times within the same area.
(Extreme Holiness and Extreme Sinfulness.)

The Garden.
Genesis 3:1
Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?”

The World.
Matthew 4:1
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil.

Outer Space.
Ephesians 2:2
in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience.

Ephesians 6:12
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the
heavenly places.

The very presence of the Lord.
Job 2:1
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.

We know that messengers of Satan can penetrate the outer skin of humans to gain entry from numbers of examples in the Bible.

Matthew 15:19
For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, slanders.

Matthew 16:23
But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but mans.”

No one should deny the abilities of messengers of Satan to bombard the Christian with all kinds of evil, perverted thoughts.

Somehow these evil messengers are able to get through our outer skin, into our minds, with the intent to control us in a direction opposing God’s standard.

This subject requires a great deal of wisdom. The demons’ plan, when they are discovered, is to get everything out of balance.

James 1:5
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

The Christian should use caution and wisdom concerning how he communicates with others on this subject.

A big mistake is made when a Christian ventures out to rid the world of demons with his new zeal and knowledge and begins looking for demons in every person he comes in contact with.
It’s interesting to note that most people, when they have a supernatural experience, always assume it comes from God. This position, of course, is terribly naive and out of sync with the Bible.

Ephesians 6:12-13
For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

Whether it is floating over your bed watching yourself sleep or an encounter with an illuminated visitor into the room at night, it’s always assumed a divine experience coming from God.

I remember one encounter I had with a man in a church. He was not a nut but a school teacher and a professional man. He told of what he considered to be a very spiritual experience that God allowed him to have. He explained that often when he took a shower, there was a black cloud that hovered over him and it provided a wonderful (hard to put in words) spiritual experience. I listened to his story and saw that he was very sincere and dead serious. It was a little hard for me to ask him the question, “How do you know that experience came from God?” His angry response toward me was extreme. His face flushed very red and he quickly stormed away from me. A few weeks later, I returned to that same church and once he saw me, he came rushing up to me and excitedly shook my hand. With gratefulness in his voice, he shared with me how thankful he was that I had raised the question in his mind that the black cloud may not have been from God. He explained how mad I had made him, but once he began thinking about it, he knew it had to be a devilish deception.

What Demons Can Do to Saints

To be delivered from the foe, you must know how to face the foe! You must claim the efficacy of the blood of Christ and the power of His Name. You must face the foe in the light of who you are in Christ and what He has done for you.

In fact, many people saved out of demon-ridden idolatry and occultism find that salvation precipitates demon activity in the new life. The new convert must claim his new position in Christ as the basis for the expulsion of the demons that had power over him before he was saved.

Page 183
Idols must be smashed. Fetishes and cult objects must be thrown away. Books of magic must be burned. There must be a clean break with idolatry. People who are unwilling to forsake their occult books and
objects need expect no liberation from the power of darkness.

Page 187
One does not have to go far these days to find believers caught in a net of demonized religion, like a struggling insect enmeshed in a spider’s web.

Some have said that one half of the world’s population is under the age of 16. There is a tremendous amount of ungodly activity going on in the world.

We, the saints, should be prepared to help the helpless.

We need to know and understand demonic deliverance.

(Fasting... Praying... Confessing of Sin... and the Power of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ = Victory)

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Spiritual infiltration is a result of sin. Sin can open the door for demonic infiltration. Confession of sin takes demonic rights away.

Deliverance often only occur as a result of prayer, fasting, confession of sin and or the power of the name of Jesus Christ.

Once demons are within a person, they will not want to leave.

If you take the demonic rights away by confession of your sin and use the power of the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, demons have to leave.

James 4:7

Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

When talking to demons, speak by faith with the understanding that even though you cannot see them, they can hear you and they are there.

If demons were to drop in on you some night to torment you, and you have a recording of the Bible, turn it on and tell the demons they came just at the right time to hear the Word of God.

Tell the Demons:
My mind, my emotions, my body and my will are mine and I will use them for the glory of God!

Any rights I have given you, I now take away in the NAME AND POWER OF THE LORD JESUS CHRIST!!!

I am a temple of the Holy Spirit.

I command all evil spirits that have any control over my mind, my emotions, my body or my will to come out, right now in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the name and power of the Lord Jesus Christ come out NOW!

The following Bible verses will help in obtaining the victory.

Philippians 2:9-11
Therefore also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, 10) that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those who are in heaven, and on earth, and under the earth, 11) and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39) nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

1 Corinthians 10:3-5
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh, 4) for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. 5) We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ.

Luke 10:17
And the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.”

2 Thessalonians 2:8
And then that lawless one will be revealed whom the Lord will slay with the breath of His mouth and bring to an end by the appearance of His coming.

Revelation 20:11
And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

James 4:7
Submit therefore to God Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

(You may not need anyone else, but you and God, to obtain deliverance.) In some cases other brothers and sisters will be helpful in the process.

Tell the Demons:

My mind, my emotions, my body and my will are mine and I will use them for the glory of God!

Any rights I have given you, I now take away in the name and power of the Lord Jesus Christ!!!

I am a temple of the Holy Spirit.
